A Different Kind of Break
Most people who come to Heimbach for the first time say the same thing: they did not expect Germany to feel like this. The Eifel National Park is not what the word Germany typically conjures. It is an ancient forest, clear river water, volcanic lakes, and a quality of silence that is becoming increasingly rare in Western Europe.
A yoga retreat in this environment is not a yoga holiday in the conventional sense. You are not checking in for spa treatments and sun loungers. You are checking out of the noise, the pace, and the endless demands of daily life – and checking in to something that has been quietly waiting for you: stillness, your own breath, and the kind of restoration that only genuine nature can provide.
This retreat is for anyone who needs to stop. Stressed professionals, new and experienced yoga practitioners, people in transition, people who have never tried yoga and simply want a few days of nature and guided practice. The only requirement is that you show up.
What Is Included in the Retreat
The retreat is fully residential. Everything is taken care of from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.
Daily Yoga Practice
Each morning begins with a Yin Yoga practice – slow, held postures that work the deeper connective tissue of the body and invite genuine stillness. The afternoon brings a Hatha Yoga session, more dynamic and energizing, designed to build strength, flexibility, and body awareness. The practices are led by Yogi Sandeep Atri, and Dr. Katharina Austermann, E-RYT 500, with modifications offered so that every level finds their edge without exceeding it.
Pranayama and Meditation
Every day includes a Pranayama session – classical breathwork techniques from the Hatha Yoga tradition. Nadi Shodhana, Kapalabhati, Ujjayi, and simple breath awareness practices that calm the nervous system and bring the mind into focus. This is followed by a meditation sitting, typically 20-40 minutes, with guidance on technique and attention.
Philosophy Workshops
Each afternoon includes a workshop exploring the practical philosophy of yoga – not as abstract theory, but as a direct guide for living. The Eight Limbs of Yoga, the relationship between breath and mental state, how yogic principles apply to daily work, relationships, and rest. These sessions are conversational and accessible to participants with no prior philosophy background.
Forest Bathing and Nature Walks
The Eifel National Park surrounds the center. Guided walks in the forest are built into the daily schedule – not as exercise, but as practice. Slow, attentive movement through old-growth forest. The research on restorative natural environments is clear: green space, moving water, and birdsong measurably reduce cortisol levels and restore attentional capacity. The walk is part of the retreat, not a break from it.
Meals
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all included throughout the retreat. Meals are home-cooked, vegetarian and vegan, prepared with seasonal and locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. We place great importance on fresh, nourishing food that supports both wellbeing and connection. All meals are shared together as a group, creating a warm and relaxed atmosphere where everyone can slow down, connect, and enjoy quality time together around the table.
Accommodation
The retreat center in Heimbach offers both shared twin rooms and private double rooms, all thoughtfully designed to provide comfort, rest, and space to recharge during the retreat. The accommodation is warm and welcoming, creating a peaceful atmosphere that supports relaxation and wellbeing, while still keeping the focus on practice, nature and meaningful connection within the group.
A Day at the Retreat
There is a rhythm to days at the Heimbach retreat that visitors notice and then, after a few days, stop noticing because they have absorbed it. The schedule alternates between effort and restoration, between group practice and personal time.

Who This Retreat Is For
The retreat is open to everyone. No prior yoga experience is needed. Modifications are available for every practice. What the retreat does require is a genuine willingness to slow down and be present.
People who come tend to fall into a few recognizable groups:
- Professionals and people in demanding roles who need a genuine reset and have tried everything except actually stopping
- Yoga practitioners who practice regularly but want to go deeper – into the philosophy, the breathwork, the meditative dimension that a weekly class rarely reaches
- People going through transition – a career change, a relationship ending or beginning, a major life decision – for whom a few days of clarity and stillness would be genuinely useful
- People who have never tried yoga and are drawn to the Eifel National Park setting as the entry point
- Couples, friends, or solo travelers who want a shared experience that is genuinely nourishing rather than simply comfortable
Why the Eifel National Park
The Eifel National Park is Germany’s only designated national park, covering over 100 square kilometers of protected ancient forest, river valleys, and volcanic lakes in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is one of the genuinely wild places left in densely populated Central Europe.
For a yoga retreat specifically, the environment matters. The practices – Yin Yoga, meditation, Pranayama, forest walking – are all pointing in the same direction: toward stillness, toward the parasympathetic nervous system, toward the part of your body and mind that the modern environment systematically suppresses. The Eifel National Park is already providing that environment. The practices simply go deeper because of it.
What makes Heimbach additionally valuable is how accessible it is. You can leave Cologne or Aachen after breakfast and be walking in the forest by midday. The retreat does not require two days of travel on either side.
Getting to Heimbach
By car: 1 hour from Cologne, 1 hour from Aachen, 1.5 hours from Düsseldorf and Maastricht, 3.5 hours from Amsterdam. Parking available at the center.
By train: Regional train from Cologne Hauptbahnhof toward Aachen, change at Düren, then connect to Heimbach (Eifel). Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes from Cologne. We collect participants from Heimbach train station.
By flight: Nearest airports are Cologne Bonn (CGN) and Dusseldorf (DUS). Transfer to Heimbach approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by train.
Germany vs Other European Yoga Retreat Destinations
Germany is not the first country most people imagine for a yoga retreat. Portugal, Greece, Spain, and Bali come to mind first. But the Eifel National Park offers something those destinations often cannot: genuine isolation from urban stimulation, combined with easy accessibility from across Central and Northern Europe.
A yoga retreat in the Mediterranean is beautiful. A yoga retreat in the Eifel is different. The coolness, the forest, the grey-green light, the silence – these produce a specific quality of inner work that warmer, more sensory-rich environments do not always provide. For people dealing with burnout, overstimulation, or stress, the Eifel’s quietness is often exactly what is needed.
For anyone based in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, or Luxembourg, the practical case is straightforward: arriving in Heimbach from Cologne takes less than 90 minutes. The retreat starts the moment you step off the train.
The Teachers
Yogi Sandeep Atri, E-RYT 500
Sandeep is a direct descendant of the Rishi Atri lineage – one of the seven Saptarishi sage families of ancient India – born near Kurukshetra, the sacred land of the Bhagavad Gita. His connection to yoga is not something he acquired through teacher training. It is something he was born into and has practiced his entire life. He has been teaching internationally for over 10 years, across Europe, Asia, and North America. His teaching style is precise, warm, and deeply rooted in tradition.
Dr. Katharina Austermann
Katharina Austermann brings a grounded and thoughtful approach to the retreat, combining her background in Nutrition and Food Science with a deep interest in the science behind yoga and contemplative practices. Through Yin Yoga, Pranayama, and meditation, she creates a calm and supportive space where participants can slow down and reconnect with themselves. Her teaching bridges scientific understanding with traditional wisdom, helping students not only practice, but also understand why these methods can have such a profound effect on body and mind. Participants often appreciate her warm, encouraging presence and the sense of ease and safety she brings into the space.
